Kamen Estate Wines, Sonoma County

In 1980 Hollywood screenwriter Robert Kamen (credits include The Karate Kid, The Fifth Element, A Walk in the Clouds and Taken) bought 280 acres of rugged, mountain terrain in the Mayacamus Range in Sonoma County. He worked with viticulturist Phil Coturri to clear enough land to plant vineyards but was determined to preserve the wilderness as much as possible which led them to commit to organic farming. The vineyards are steep and rocky, and the stressed vines produce very low yields and some of the plots are now fully certified as biodynamic. At first Kamen sold fruit to other winemakers but after a devastating fire on the property Robert determined to rebuild and improve the estate and the first commercial release was the 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon. Although Kamen Estate Wines have gone from strength to strength they have managed to retain their boutique feel for hand crafted, organic wines of the highest quality possible.
