Eagles' Nest, Constantia

Wine has been produced at the Eagles' Nest farm since 1650 when it was the favoured nectar of the Dutch nobility. The farm has subsequently had a chequered history producing fruit, then vegetables before being reforested with pine trees to encourage indigenous vegetation. A fire which swept over the mountain in 2000 and devastated everything provided the Mylrea family with an opportune moment and they decided to re-invest and bring the farm back to its former glory. In 2001 terraces were dug into the sleep valley sides and vines established. The valley is only 5km from the coast and benefits from the cool trade winds and the cooler climate can certainly be tasted in all of the Eagles' Nest wines. Careful root stock selection matched with soil type, very low yields, hand harvesting and gentle winemaking ensure that the tiny amount of wine produced (103,000 bottles per anum) on this lovely farm is handcrafted and at the peak of excellence.
