Altenkirch are based in Lorch, where the Rhine is at its narrowest, with vertiginous 60 percent slopes falling down to its banks. These rocky slopes make brilliant Riesling vineyards, catching the sun and giving the vines maximum exposure to its rays. The rocky soil forces the vines roots deep into the earth, giving the wines the mineral character that bursts from each glass. Only manual labour is possible here and Altenkirch take pride in the meticulous work they do in their vineyards. Organic and bio dynamic principles are followed, though not certified. In the winery natural yeasts are used and the wines are allowed to ferment at their own speed with as little intervention as possible; every attempt is made to preserve the unique terroir.
