Burgundy 2009 - Vintage of the Century?
We visited Burgundy in the second week of September and came away with the strong impression of a special vintage to remember especially for reds of the Cote de Beaune, a view that was certainly reinforced by a fabulous tasting at Domaine Lafarge. Our only concern is whether the whites will be fresh enough; though a ripe, approachable vintage could be handy after the raciness of 2007 and 2008.
As for cost we don't expect to see Bordelais-style price hikes for the 2009s, though there will doubtless be a premium, especially on the rarer things. The only rogue factor is the 2010 vintage with reported problems of millerandage (mixed maturity within the bunches). As ever with Burgundy it is madness to speculate too early but this could encourage vignerons to capitalise a little on their 2009 pricing. Let's hope not!
